Ha Giang Loop map

The Ha Giang Loop is a circuit through the far north of Vietnam that starts and finishes in Ha Giang city. This is the road we ride, stop by stop - the passes, the market towns and the river gorge, and what each one is known for.

The 7 stops

  1. Ha Giang on the Ha Giang Loop

Ha Giang - start and finish

The gateway city where every loop begins and ends, and home to our own Flipside Villa - collect your bike, fuel up and roll out into the mountains.

  2. Quan Ba on the Ha Giang Loop

    Quan Ba

Heaven's Gate pass and the Twin Mountains - your first big view out over the karst valleys.

  3. Yen Minh on the Ha Giang Loop

    Yen Minh

Pine forests and a calm valley town - the green, quiet stretch that breaks up the karst passes.

  4. Dong Van on the Ha Giang Loop

    Dong Van

The old Karst Plateau town - a cobbled ancient quarter, a Sunday morning market worth getting up for, and the H'mong King's palace nearby.

  5. Ma Pi Leng on the Ha Giang Loop

    Ma Pi Leng

The crown jewel - the Ma Pi Leng Pass hanging high above the turquoise Nho Que River gorge.

  6. Meo Vac on the Ha Giang Loop

    Meo Vac

A remote market town ringed by peaks, and the launch point for boat trips into the Tu San canyon.

  7. Du Gia on the Ha Giang Loop

    Du Gia

A laid-back village of homestays, rice paddies and a waterfall - the mellow final stretch of the loop.

  8. The pool at the Flipside villa at sunset, with the karst hills behind it

    And then back to Flipside

The loop finishes where it started. Drop the bike, get in the pool, and let the last few days catch up with you - the mountains you have just ridden still in front of you.

How to do the loop

We ride this route over three or four days, in small groups, with local guides. You can ride it yourself, sit pillion behind an easy rider, or do the whole thing by 4x4 if you would rather leave the driving to someone else.

Both lengths start and finish at our villa in Ha Giang, and the nights out on the loop are spent in homestays in the villages on the map above.
